SAHPS News and Press Releases

Get a glimpse of Christmas’s past as Penelope Newton (Haley Phillips) welcomes you to her home during El Dorado’s Downtown Christmas Open House on Sunday, November 24, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. –  4:00 p.m.  The Newton House Museum is located at 510 N Jackson Avenue. Built in 1849, this home is a premier example of antebellum Greek revival architecture and the only pre-Civil War home open to the public in El Dorado.

Penelope Newton celebrated many Christmas’s in this home with her family and wants to share that experience with your family. Enjoy some refreshments as you explore the house, decorated for the Christmas holidays, and shop from our unique collection of one-of-a-kind gifts for that special person on your list. Who wouldn’t love to find a jar of Mayhaw Jelly in their stocking on Christmas morning?

There will be plenty of fun activities for the children to do including decorating their own Christmas Cookies to take home or play old fashion games on the lawn (weather permitting). Penelope will also spend time reading the classic “Twas the Night Before Christmas” just as she did to her children in this very home so long ago.

The Newton House Museum is owned and operated by the South Arkansas Historical Preservation Society, Inc. whose offices are located at 411 E Faulkner.  The Historical Society also has the “Gallery of History”, a 5,000 square foot exhibit space located at 412 E Faulkner open to the public.  This Gallery presents a look back at south Arkansas, the families that formed the fabric of who we are today, the fun places we remember from our past and the events that shaped us.  And for a look back at our impressive sports history… step into “The Union County Sports Hall of Fame” located in the front gallery, just off the Gift Shop. The Newton House Museum, the Gallery of History, the Union County Sports Hall of Fame and Penelope’s Gift Shop are open on Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  Friday from 8:00 a.m.- 12:00 noon. Saturday and Sunday by appointment.  Come out and join us for a fun, free family day.  We look forward to seeing you!
